Naming Names
A thagomizer is an informal scientific term that refers to the tail spikes on certain kinds of Stegosaur dinosaurs. It has been used by such institutions as Utah's Dinosaur National Monument, and the Smithsonian Institution website (per wikipedia).
The term actually comes from Gary Larson's Far Side comic panel shown here. The caption to this panel is "Now this end is called the thagomizer, after the late Thag Simmons".
I have always loved the nerdy and sadly ended cartoons of the Far Side.
