Part of the Sikh faith, like many other religions and philosophies, is treating people well and giving back to the greater community.
One way this is done is an event called a Langar or "free kitchen", which are hosted in Sikh communities all over the world.
All people regardless of faith, age, social class, wealth, gender or race are welcome to a free meal provided by the Sikhs who volunteer to cook, serve, and wash dishes. The meals are vegetarian - Sikhs aren't necessarily vegetarians but their Jewish, Indian, or Muslim guests might be, and they don't want them to feel excluded. Everyone is required to sit together on the floor to eat. Hundreds or even thousands of meals might be served up.
Nobody is asked to convert or be preached to - it is a gesture of goodwill, of giving back to the community.
This tradition was begun by at least the 14th century in India (where the Sikh faith originates) as an effort to break down the thoroughly entrenched caste system. Imagine how revolutionary this idea of equality was at that time.
I think the world would definitely be a better place if there were more free meals.
